I can't tell whether it's a head cannon people have invented or if it's intentional

But it fits pretty well, his sexuality is left as a blank slate throughout the film (he never seems interested in pursuing girls like some of the other boys), he has a very close emotional bond with his male roommate, and the whole acting thing can clearly be viewed as symbollism for something deeper. he's not playing a masculine role in the play and it visibly disturbs his father, and it seems like there is more to the suicide (especially with the conversation between him and his parents in the night leading up to it)
