it’s the most convenient surface for outdoor activities: soft, barefoot friendly, good temperature regulation, fire safe, relatively erosion proof.

it’s way more flexible than anything else

and yes, maybe part of it is a status symbol that you aren’t a bum and have some level of pride in maintaining your property. useful for judging what kind of neighborhood you want to live in
