Long-Term Effects (Heavy/Chronic Use):

In people who drink heavily over a long period, especially starting from a young age, alcohol can:

Cause brain shrinkage (particularly in the prefrontal cortex)

Damage white matter, which impairs brain communication

Lead to cognitive decline, memory problems, and executive function deficits

In extreme cases, lead to alcohol-related brain damage (e.g., Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome)

These effects may result in long-term decreases in cognitive ability, which can appear as a drop in IQ, though it’s really about brain function degradation.
