FYI - Somalis are much more recent to Lewiston than you think. They started arriving in 2000 and 2001. See here.
That being said, I was called nigger prior to the arrival of the Somalis. Lewiston itself has such a fraught history when it comes to racism (and classism) due to the immigration prior to the Somalis - the French Canadian entry into Lewiston was not smooth sailing either.
I, personally, have experienced it overtly in many locations - not just in more rural locations. Portland, Maine is a place filled with people who used to live somewhere else, after all. It is definitely less present there (by far!) but it is still there.
