Zelensky had promised the electorate he would ease the situation in the Donbass, but he was soon forced to realise that the ultranationalist forces that were part of the Ukrainian armed forces and security State would not allow him to do that, and he had to back down and cooperate with them. Nor did he improve the language rights situation for Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine.
