the way the entire site is projected is a huge filter itself. the 'ranks' (as you see the name colour on .org) have an actual meaning there. for example, past certain post count, and months since you registered you get in another offtopic section, then after more posts and log-time are accrued the 'b-n-e-.' I think the registration already filters brainlets, feds, intruders, or simply those who have no affinity at all and want to act as chaotic agents. trust me one user is enough to annoy the entire forum and shift the meta of discussion. I think it did maintain the quality of the forum, despite being a little worse now because of what happened to the Admins (the doxxing) - there's a reason older users are still there.
