[Theory]
do people actually use messaging apps besides whatsapp and sms?
#1
like telegram or signal or whatever that was trending during covid lockdown?
I don't know anyone who uses those "Alternate messaging apps".

only things people use are WhatsApp and SMS (including iMessage) as far as I know.

of course Instagram has messaging too but its not primarily a texting platform

maybe in russian-speaking countries they use telegram more @"зайчик"

i do not. it isn't one of the tools i think people would use for 'personal' stuff, it's more of, say decentralized 'report' channels you can join, that or groups. i seen some servers (script kiddie related stuff) and it's similar to Discord in a way, difference it's not censored

i never used telegram so im not really sure how it works, but since u said its like discord i understand a bit.

My whole family has telegram. Other than that i hardly ever meet new people, but most have a telegram even if they don't use it much

It got a really bad rep the last three years, because it doesn't censor content as much as other platforms. So a lot of "conspiracy theory" groups showed up on it and people make fun of people who are using telegram

Before that it was known as a more secure alternative for whatsapp. That's why people in my university started using it

I also like the app a lot more. It's better designed than whatsapp imo + you can run the same account on multiple devices, which whatsapp still can't
