turns out I'm not crazy at all for being terrified by large masses of water

Quote:What is thalassophobia? Thalassophobia is an intense phobia or fear of large bodies of water. If you have thalassophobia, you may be afraid of the ocean, sea, and large lakes. Some people may deal with a little anxiety about the ocean.

@kathisterima

and no, this has nothing to do with me being a bad swimmer, for geniuses trying to imply that the last time I mentioned it

this fear doesn't activate in pools, for example

I used to do sailing as a kid (my father forced me because he had this weird obsession), I was absolutely terrified of deep black sea on a windy day when I was far away from shore. Like, I remember one day there was 5 Beaufort wind blowing, and I had a race, and it was like the worst thing ever. Wet as fuck, cold as fuck, the boom about to take your head off while jibing, beam reach felt like inches away from keeling, paranoid as fuck about sharks biting my limbs off... stuff of nightmares

You're crazy if you can chill on the surface of deep water without being scared

This

it's terrifying even if the odds of something grabbing you from beneath is virtually non-existent (which is the case 99% of the time)

I get scared by heights much easier than by water. It just feels good to swim in water. When i was about 11 we went on vacation to gran canaria and i swam in the ocean for 5 hours non-stop. Only scary time was when a big wave pulled me down and it took a while until i stopped drifting into the ocean. When i was 10 i went to ibiza and did some snorkling. it´s really clear water there. another time i went to alicante and got bitten by something in the foot five seconds after i went into the water so i didn´t go in afterwards.

you realize phobias are mental illness, right?

phobia = irrational fear.

no one says it's wrong to be fearful of certain things, but having an irrational fear is wrong.
