Inner monologue is probably an impediment. It limits your thought to how fast you can think verbally might be useful for things requiring meticulous planning going step by step, but thinking in the pure abstract or visual form is going to be much faster and more efficient. I think it's a more evolved mode of thinking, the bridge between verbal communication and telepathy.
