it's not an invitation to have an indepth discussion, otherwise they'd be more specific

they are just trying to let you know that they care about you (that's where they are wrong)

and even this is pretty rare. most people just use these (how are you, what's up etc) as an extension to a simple "hi" because "hi" alone might sound too cold if you ve communicated with those people more than 5 minutes in your life
