something that always bothered me about the movie gattaca

that one scene where he’s talking about swimming with his brother and he reveals how he won the contest with the line “i never saved any energy for the swim back”
this sounds poetic on the surface level but makes zero fucking sense considering the movie (from my memory) quite literally shows him not only swimming back, but also pulling his exhausted brother back with him, the same brother who is shown to be genetically physically superior
how is this meant to make sense?

i was seeing some interview about IVF eugenics and it made me think of this movie and particularly this moment, which for me marred an otherwise good movie

the only way it would kind of make sense is if he passed his brother, and then they both start drowning due to the storm getting worse, but are somehow saved. but i can’t figure out how the last part would happen so i guess it doesn’t make sense from a plot standpoint but at least it logically makes sense
