I've always had this theory that hoarders are a specific type of people to just be gatherers in a hunter gathering society. 

I mean I know many people who just wanna buy everything, feels the compulsive need to keep everything and gets anxious at the thought of removing them.

Its just a matter of severity.

my theory is that it's a holdover from when we didn't have cheap chinese/indian goods made in sweatshops, which is why this pathology is only common in old people. there's no logical reason in 2024 to be hoarding a torn up piece of burnt plastic, but here we are

My aunt used to do the same. We used to in the same building, just above she, she had piles of trash outside her door that blocked the way, and refused to throw them away. 

Also we shared a storage room in the basement and she had filled it with trash from 30 yrs ago. At one point a cat sneaked in when someone opened the window and got trapped in and died somewhere inside the pile of rubbish. The whole place ended up stinking so bad that she had to throw everything away. Maybe an idea for you.
