you should have corrected his op. it's "semi-literate", ffs. "semi-illiterate" is not technically wrong, but it makes no sense because the point of the expression is to say someone's ability is reduced. "semi-illiterate" would be the right choice if someone wanted to say something like "despite being homeschooled/born in a hillbilly family/brain-damaged/whatever, he is still only semi-illiterate"
