Igf has minimal effect. Gigantism is treated with testosterone, igf blockers are not used. The main effect of igf would be to cause hyperinsulemia and shrink testicles just like exogenous testosterone does.

gigantism occurs cuz of pitutary problems or perhaps a pitutary tumor. test is supplemented to REDUCE that tumor and make it go away. cuz test mogs. not to decrease or kill igf-1 jfl.

in fact, its the opposite, testosterone increases IGF-1 levels produced in the liver although very minimal, just enough for recovery and metabolic aid.

see there are 2 things in ur brain -- hypothalamus and pitutary gland. they are not the same but they are near each other.
what happens is the hypothalamus signals various things to the pitutary for the pitutary gland to produce and the pitutary gland actually produces the hormones.

the same with growth and height, ur hypothalamus signals to the pitutary to release somatropin.
the somatropin goes into ur blood stream and hits ur liver.
in the liver it is metabolized into IGF-1, insulin-like growthfactor-1 which is actually used by ur cells to grow.

when the serum IGF-1 levels are more than what u can handle, the pancreas or hypothalamus (but mainly pancreas) release a hormone called somastatin.
somastatin goes to ur pitutary gland to stop the production of somatropin.
TSH, and FSH production are ALSO stopped by somastatin.


this is how the regulation of growth takes place.

now coming to gigatism, what happens is, there is a TUMOUR or a pitutary problem (in the anterior pitutary usually), which
- cannot take the signals of somastatin due to being blocked by the tumour (literally)
- cannot take in somastatin, cuz the somatotroph cells DONT RECOGNIZE the hormone
u get the point. somastatin is not effectively worked.

patients who tall and lanky have delayed puberty because as I mentioned, the somastatin binds to TSH receptors unequally, delaying test levels.

so to treat gigantism, usually synthetic forms of somastatin that ONLY bind to the somatotroph cell receptors are created and injected into ur bloodstream.
and very very very rarely test to reduce pitutary tumor sizes to open up the bloodstream pathways to the pitutary gland.
