THE DARKER a lion mane is, the HEALTHIER and HIGHER T it is.

The explanation basically is that, darker mane is a sign that it can handle the heat more and hence have a higher chance of survivability.

If a lion gets unhealthy it loses the darkness in its mane. and once it recovers, it gets it back.
but that's not the cherry on the cake here.
