Hitler held a cyclical view of history, and understood that all civilizations, including his own Reich, had their rise and fall. “Men and wars come and go. What lasts are the great monuments such as the Parthenon and the Coliseum.” He assumed that he and Nazi Germany would be forgotten, but not what the Nazis had built, literally and ideologically. During the war he mused “The day will come when no one will be able to think except in the manner of National Socialism.” In April of 1945, with the war lost, he proclaimed in his last will and testament “pride in having rid Europe of the Jewish poison.” Both accomplishments would last “1,000 years”, a symbolic number, but then whomever inherited the earth would have to work within his legacy.
