They realise something simple:
It feels bad to get hurt.
It doesn’t feel bad to hurt others, and sometimes it feels good; ergo, I will avoid getting hurt and will hurt others when I please.
The only necessity is that you ‘give up’ your ability to feel the pain of others. This usually happens physiologically and isn’t so much an actual choice as a mechanistic response to the environment.
Sometimes sociopaths are defined as people who are aware of the ‘morality’ of their actions but choose not to care, while psychopaths can’ t tell if they are doing something ‘wrong’ or not. In sociopathy it’s a willing ignorance. An empathy switch. (Although in psychopaths it might be turned off by default, with the ability to be turned on whenever they want). Higher IQ psychopaths get into less petty crimes because they have cognitive empathy (aka they have a theory of mind and understand consequences).
I’d say the vast majority of sociopaths are born that way, via various gene expressions and prenatal conditions. Some get their mirror neurons and sense of feeling seared through periods of high stress and abuse - overexcitation?
