I have a lot of 'mental breakdowns' these days and had so for years. Constantly thinking about calling some support number or having myself institutionalized, but I always decide against it.
And I've done everything in the past. I went through all their programs. Ironically, it made me more mentally ill.
You sit at some stupid psychiatric office. The doctor is bored, annoyed and overpaid. You tell him your life story in 10 minutes, he tells you to do sports, go outside and eat well. Then he prescribes you some medications you don't need.
Psychiatric hospitals are, as Houellebeqc writes, only useful as an alternative to homelessness. You will not be cured. If you are suicidal, they'll keep you from suicide. If you need to quit some drug, they'll support you with withdrawal.
If you have ordinary depression (major depressive disorder, bioplar), try everything besides psychiatry.
