One of the biggest problems is that a lot of mentally ill people can fake their persona when they visit a psychologist or perhaps a psychiatrist as well, so they always go undiagnosed, notwithstanding what their known ones may tell to the psychologist.
But at the same time, I've seen lots of folk state that a lot of psychological diagnoses may be fake all along as they're based on what you said - prejudicial notions of what's normal and what's not. Some folk also state that psychiatry is a lot more genuine than psychology is, while others just deny both of them altogether.
I can't give a conclusive answer to this as I'm not very experienced on the topic, but still it seems like lots of ideas and diagnoses within psychology seem based on prejudices.
