If you are in college you can postpone it until max 35 or something.
But they really make it impossible to avoid service: if you want to for example renounce your citizenship, the law says "...and to renounce citizenship, you first have to clear conscription."
Then the new pro-EU government started to gradually abolish conscription. They first cut it from 12 months to 6 etc.
But my time was coming nonetheless. I even remember president Tadic saying around 2007: "...but those who are military aged today need to still be conscripted."
In the end I was able to pull corruptive strings, and have myself declared medically unfit.

conscription time was 9 months here, until 2019 when the fascist government (same one that wants to kick me out of uni) decided it should punish young people by increasing time to 12 months and making the exemption process even more difficult
