There are a couple of reasons (more or less valid, blah blah blah) to consider him a great genius, albeit less brilliant than other geniuses, but understanding an invention (not to mention how “interesting” an invention is) without considering its implications depends strictly on the observer.
Understanding depends on your intelligence, and whether it’s “interesting” or not depends on your familiarity with that specific domain of functionality and your intelligence.
