The people of Crimea were as pro-Russian as it can only be so it's obvious what their self determination was after Maidan. Putin tried to deescalate the entire 8 years, didn't even demand the Donbass and only wanted neutrality and to retain the control of Crimea due to the strategic naval base. Ukraine refused to adhere to the Minsk agreement and cut the water supply to 2 million Crimeans (85% of their water came from the river Dnieper) which caused an environmental catastrophe. The funny thing is that Putin was likely fed wrong intel and attacked with a tiny army to do a quick regime change further proving he didn't want a large scale war nor the territory of Ukraine. Even until now he has been open to a peace deal which has been more than generous given the total one sidedness of the casualties which are likely at least five times higher on the Ukrainian side.
The Eurocucks are just hoping Russia gives up or collapses internally. That is what they are betting on. But Ukraine is already out of men now, their losses are in the millions. Most Russians can already smell the victory without needing any general mobilization and in fact they even don't want the Putin deal as it doesn't reflect the gravity of the situation for the Ukrainians. I actually think not even Putin wants that deal and that he is only offering it to make it look like he is pro-peace for PR reasons.
Self-determination of Ukraine is paramount. They decided to join the EU in 2014, and all of their ambitions and governments are legitimate since then.
Russia fears this democratization because they would be next. So they invented false pretexts to invade.
