How would you know the difference if someone decided to say that god is 1 and not a trinity

Islam denies that God is a Trinity.
Plural unity:

God is a Trinity composed of three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
“God is one God”. This implies the usual misrepresentation of the Trinity as tritheism. Trinitarians believe in one God, so the point knocks down a straw man,   “one” is often used of a composite unity.

Even in Genesis, we see an indication of the plurality of the Godhead—meaning that God is made up of more than one Person.
