Making movie characters one dimensional caricatures is the most common thing that pisses me off. Its fine if its a movie that requires a lot of comic relief but to involve serious topics with said characters just makes the whole thing a bust.
Diary of the Wimpy Kid used these characters well because they movie was a feel-good whimsical plot for young adults and kids
Conversely good characters such as this show and whiplash = awesome. If you are constantly trying to guess what a character is thinking about, his thoughts, his motives and you are completely hooked then that's a good character.
I felt that way with the Fletcher A LOT.
