what's the deal with people insisting "they don't want money" while ... taking it?

i've had a couple of situations where i was supposed (and willing) to pay people I know (acquaintance level) for providing a service to me, just for them to keep telling me they aren't materialists, they don't care about money, money is not everything in life ... while taking the said money.

puts me in a very uncomfortable position where, if i say "ok if you say yo, thanks for the free service", but we all know how that pans out - with them pretending it's all cool at first, but then holding it against me for the foreseeable future, including considering me to be a cheap person and even telling it to others

just take the money, retards, it's not that i'm giving it to your for nothing; you earned it
