The mirror test is a behavioral experiment that assesses whether an animal can recognize itself in a mirror. It's also known as the mark test, mirror self-recognition (MSR) test, red spot technique, or rouge test. 

How it works 

1. An animal is anesthetized and marked with a dye or sticker on a part of its body that's normally hidden.
   
2. The animal is placed in front of a mirror after recovering from the anesthetic.
   
3. The animal's reaction to the mirror is observed.
   

What it indicates
If the animal touches or investigates the mark, it's considered an indication that it recognizes itself in the mirror. This behavior suggests that the animal has self-awareness.
