I think that's due to East Asians lacking individualism and extrovertism. Many of them I meet are just reserved and shy.
Most of my Japanese friends can't even talk about anything too taboo, and often giggle excessively while covering their mouth to escape from any uncomfortable topic. Though I think that's more stemming from their insecurity with their unaligned teeth.
Koreans are much more extroverted though, do they do well in the US?
