But people talk in their sleep while they are experiencing the dream, and have surge of adrenaline during nightmares. 

That's like saying that daydreams aren't real, and that your brain is just making up a dialogue afterwards to explain the temporarily lapse in awareness.
You can also wake up mid-dream and be aware that the dream was ended prematurely. 

Unless I'm misunderstanding your post.
