also on the topic of grad students, ugly clothing, and personality induction: there was another time when these things came together. at one conference i made friends with a few cool academics (hard to find in my cringe field). this one kept complimenting my outfits, and though she's not exactly hot, based on other aspects of her personality and things we discussed I was inclined to accept this compliment

But I got a slight ick months later. I was visiting the city where her university is and we went out for a drink and came talking about fashion. she had some good takes but then she was telling me about her approach to her own wardrobe. She said something to the effect "I like something that's sexy but makes me seem a little unhinged" and I was like okkkk hunty I see you. I had in mind she was thinking like flared pants and a midriff or whatever. But no, she showed me an example, it was a pair of poorly fitting green neon fucking jeans with a huge kissy lips or something (can't remember exactly) plastered all over the ass area. Equipped with this new information about her sartorial tastes, I then thought back to all the times she thought I was wearing something nice. When I returned home I took a good long look at my wardrobe
