Reminder: Schizophrenia did not exist before the invention of the telephone

Before the telephone, it was not possible for the majority of humanity to conceptualize the idea that voices could be separated from their sources. It was limited to mystics, oracles, and prophets.

With the telephone, this became a quotidian experience. This epistemic shift eventually became the source of a new psychiatric diagnosis: schizophrenia.
