beats me too. when i first heard of that 23andme site, i caged and couldnt believe people were so stupid to pay for an obvious scam that will just get them random percentages presented in the "result"

the discipline dealing with this is called genetic genealogy and, apparently, while no one can claim 100% accuracy for distant history, the results are far more robust (?) than just educated guessing. 

dont ask me more, i found biology to be harder than math and physics combined in hs.

I think it's legit. I did 23andme a few years ago, and the ethnicity percentages at least largely accord with the work I did on ancestry.com. And of course nobody is exactly 50% mom and 50% dad. People always said I look a lot more like my mom and my mom's lineage was emphasized on the report. The really old stuff like maternal haplogroups seems ridiculous. But i'm ignorant about it as well.
