Large-scale crime is objective, but doing low-scale crime comes more down to simple, opportunistic dynamics.
For example, not paying for a few groceries at a big-box retailer isn't the same as armed robbery of a big bank.
You have to take it in strides and analyze cost:benefit analysis, perspective and risk vs. reward.
If you don't even think about it you can logically consider crime a coincidence rather than an objective, premeditated thing. It's all about how you approach the subject ... Go in like an aspie and fail, but sometimes accidents happen too.
