I used to watch pornography sporadically but somewhat regularly and masturbated fairly regularly. This had a very detrimental effect on my physical and mental health. However no matter what tips and tricks or self-improvement I tried nothing seemed to work for me to stop. I would still end up jerking off a few times a week, and even if I wasn't watching pornography, their deleterious effects would still affect me as I had associated those pornographic videos and images with the act of masturbation.
However, shortly after converting to Catholicism and practicing my faith I have stopped almost completely. This is because masturbation and pornography are grave sins according to the Catholic Church, and you must go to confession and receive absolution for them with a priest before you can receive the Eucharist during Mass. And not receiving the Eucharist means being severed from the Body of Christ, and therefore His full love, which very tangibly damages your soul.
After going to confession for the first and then second time to confess my sins of masturbation and pornography, I abstained from pornography completely, and masturbation to rarely because I didn't want to go through the trouble and embarrassment of telling a priest of the times I watched videos or jerked off (they do ask for specifics to give you advice and assign you a penance). Not to mention not being able to receive the Eucharist.
I haven't been a particularly religious person during most of my life, but having a specific set of rules with accountability external to yourself is extremely effective. But only when that external accountability partner was God was when it was enough for me to stop.
If you are having problems with pornography and masturbation, I suggest you try this.
