OK, their music was played a lot, but there were many bands in the 2000's with more annoying songs.

Reasons:
1. They are white and straight, not effeminate
2. Their songs are sincere, no irony, no detachment
3. They don't try to sound black, no dance or hip hop influence

Of course, you can dislike them, cause it's not your personal taste. But that's different from obsessive hatred.

It was certainly not a nerd band. Lots of their songs were marketed towards women. And the type of man it appeals to is probably a conservative leaning normie, not a nerd.
