It's good to underline and make notes, but often one remembers more of the book than one thinks. It goes into the subconscious. Often when you have a thought, you rediscover it in something that you've read and the thought reproduces itself in your head as new with maybe some things add on to it.

It's worth reading so far, although if one has never read anything by Mann before, the best introduction to his style would be one of his earlier books, especially "Tonio Kröger", "Death In Venice" or even "Buddenbrooks". But I don't want to discourage you. Check it out.
