TIP: The screen of LCD devices becomes dim when battery runs low
#1
Quote:Each pixel of an LCD typically consists of a layer of molecules aligned between two transparent electrodes, often made of indium tin oxide (ITO) and two polarizing filters (parallel and perpendicular polarizers), the axes of transmission of which are (in most of the cases) perpendicular to each other. Without the liquid crystal between the polarizing filters, light passing through the first filter would be blocked by the second (crossed) polarizer. Before an electric field is applied, the orientation of the liquid-crystal molecules is determined by the alignment at the surfaces of electrodes. In a twisted nematic (TN) device, the surface alignment directions at the two electrodes are perpendicular to each other, and so the molecules arrange themselves in a helical structure, or twist. This induces the rotation of the polarization of the incident light, and the device appears gray. If the applied voltage is large enough, the liquid crystal molecules in the center of the layer are almost completely untwisted and the polarization of the incident light is not rotated as it passes through the liquid crystal layer. This light will then be mainly polarized perpendicular to the second filter, and thus be blocked and the pixel will appear black. By controlling the voltage applied across the liquid crystal layer in each pixel, light can be allowed to pass through in varying amounts thus constituting different levels of gray.

To summarize: depleted batteries provide insufficient voltage, which the liquid crystals of LCD devices rely on to create an electric field that aligns and controls the passage of light on the display. A weaker electric field will cause a lower contrast, in which the display may appear dim or faint, that is the result of a weakened electric field.

Conclusion: If you observe faint screen on your devices and are gonna be using them on an occasion where you can't be changing batteries, do it beforehand.

I had this fear of my calculator or my watch running out of battery during exams, but then I put 2 and 2 together and created this safety net, thus banishing my fear to the depths of moroccan rape and torture valleys of hell.

I honestly thought everyone knew this

I check the brightness and and how responsive the screen is when I clear

Though, these days I just bring 2 standard calculators to any exam. For class I always have the es calc app on my phone

you "knew this" but didn't know why it happens

so you didnt know jack shit

read the fucking thread because I'm sure you didn't before claiming that you know it

I actually did, not specific enough to understand on a fundamental level ( I am not a technical person ) but I was aware of why it dims

I just meant the conclusion part

I googled it once since while I was doing my IGCSEs I had 3 identical 570MS calcs

But one of them was really dim

Nowadays I have my contrast setting on the lowest because I like the washed out look
