mental retardation is quantifiable, so the alleged 'retard' can just take an IQ test and be free of it
autism, on the other hand, is the same as a mental illness diagnosis, in a way. no matter how hard you try and prove you're not autistic, no matter how hard you try and sever yourself from the stigma, the observer can always just say "you're faking being normal"... and your identity is bound to this diagnosis made by a person who thinks they can read your mind
people need their freaks to elevate themselves, i guess

unfortunately, my IQ is 90. i'm sure if i had 20 more IQ points i could make a convincing case, but then again, if i had 20 more IQ points i wouldn't be an autist

Autism is a thing where it will be quite obvious if someone is low functioning, and high functioning would be pointless to get diagnosed with, and wouldn’t serve the patient in any way

^ not to mention low and high functioning are the farthest apart on the spectrum of any disease I’ve heard of, yet you’d get lumped in with everyone with autism even if you can perform all basic human activities

My cousin couldn't speak until he was 5 or so and has high-functioning autism, I think it was attributed to this?
He had to do extensive therapy sessions to learn how to speak.
Btw, now that he is like 16 you can understand he has a problem if you speak with him for longer than 10 seconds.
So, I'm not sure how high functioning he is. Obviously, the spectrum is pretty large.

there's a HUGE overlap between autism and low IQ
that being said, heaps of 'autistic' kids grow out of it by the time they're 20 or so
the whole thing is a sham, imo. it's such a bullshit disease; the best proof of this is when 'autists' with self awareness, who can functional normally, have been so brainwashed by society(???) that they just say they're 'masking' their symptoms. ??? that is way more in line with OCD than anything. if you're 'autistic', and you're so good at disguising it that nobody can tell.. you get the gist... sorry for going off on a tangent, but it's total crap man
