I've read less than 2 dozen books my whole life - Ropium - 06-05-2026

Bear in mind I'm 63 and majority of these were required reading

From order of oldest to most recent

Where the red fern grows
Call of the wild
Tom sawyer
Flowers for algernon
A separate peace
Lord of the flies
Romeo and juliet
Catcher in the rye
The crucible
Macbeth
Hamlet
Henry 5th
Pit and pendulum
A tale of two cities
The chocolate war
Fahrenheit 451
Wuthering heights
Brave new world

Read voluntarily:
Do androids dream
Neuromancer
Metamorphosis

Attempted to read/skimmed:
Don quioxte
Dorian gray
1984
Notes from the underground(reminded me of mvp)
Swanns way
Odyssey
Illiad
Beowulf
Fineegans wake
Ulysses
Starship troopers
Faust

I often make references to works I've never read like 1984 or animal farm to bolster my arguments or make allusions to difficult works by joyce and faulkner to pretend like I'm well read. I can do this because I have deep understanding of literature through passive cultural osmosis. I feel like I know more about these works than people who have read them multiple times. I will often notice puns in Shakespeare that websites made by academics get wrong.

The Shakespeare plays. I can still remember stanzas from it from almost 5 decades ago. I remember nothing from the rest

Crucible was pure commie apologism propaganda they let us choose if we wanted to read maya angelo and some Jewish lesbian civil rights slop ie to kill a mockingbird bird or dystopian sci fi i chose the latter with no hesitation lol

You can condense entire high school English course into a week of film adaptations plus teacher commentary and anonymized discussion(to encourage free thought) leaving way more room for older more deserving content like the Greek plays, roman, medieval and Renaissance literature adaptations instead of post WW2 propaganda. I bet kids would be more into learning about the first road rager(oedipus) or mass shooter(Odysseus) than some loser lynch victim

The movie blew the book away TBH lol

Lol at philip k dock claiming the movie was exactly what he envisioned   Giggle

If you have a brain that is adapted to an environment where indecision gets you killed, you cannot sit around and read, you must know truth at the snap of a twig. I have such a brain. I am a throwback to ancient greeks. The greeks have a concept called noesis where you basically know everything without needing to learn. This is something that has been selected out of civilization by increased safety and leisure. If you think about it, humans have everything they need to thrive directly out of the womb, it's all encoded into the dna. Any information outside of dna almost certainly superfluous

I would encourage them not to begin. Id recommend Google search ai or wikipedia instead of they're really curious about something they can know essentially everything about it using wikipedia(use alt right web resources like twitter, Odyssee if it's a controversial subject). Generally you want to use time efficiently and books just aren't effecient end of story.
