While it is technically possible to force yourself to, if it wasn't for certain idiots who truly do it, humanity would not have that worship of science which we see today. For example, note how many times professor dave explains uses an appeal to authority fallacy in his recent call-in stream. But they are obscured by science being equivalent to truth. Without NPCs science wouldn't have many people engaged in it.
