He probably didn't receive enough praise as a kid, maybe his parents neglected him, or maybe he was a excluded from friend groups as a kid. So now you have a 40 year old manchild with a sense of inadequacy and fragile ego, which leads to him constantly trying to be above everyone else because that's what he learned he needed to be in order to receive validation from adults and kool kids at school.
