Did aoe2 destroy the RTS genre? - kathisterima - 12-04-2022
It seems to have solidified it's stupid game mechanics as the RTS standard. Gathering resources and constructing buildings does not belong to a strategy game. Spamming clicks and multitasking with your super advanced mouse and keyboard and huge monitor isn't tactics or gameplay. I wish RTS games were restricted to just being about combat, and whoever employed the best tactics would win, not some stupid sim city building apm dickmeasuring contest.
One RTS series that drew my attention was ultimate general. It was really fun playing the confederate campaign, too bad they are now focusing on building warship games. Here's some gameplay:

I never really played AOE. Prefer Civilisation 5 really.
I have saw some videos that RTS games are in the shitter now which is a shame. But I do prefer RTS games like Total War over other RTS.

Although idk if I consider total war to be an RTS since the battles are but the map campaign isnt.

Why don't you like it? For me it got a bit annoying as I was playing more fast paced games and got used to that

I get impatient and end up tabbing out and doing something else. I've got to small attention span for playing games in general these days.

CiV 5 is also a banger - it gets several times better when you add some mods (they are very easy to find and install)
The best mod for overall gameplay is probably the Vox Populi mod
