serfdom never went away, its nature just changed - MysteriousWeeb420 - 17-04-2025

owning land = everything

you may not be out in the fields breaking your back anymore, but providing a stream of resources in exchange for somewhere to spend the night is conceptually the same

all the power is held by land, which is passed down the family lines

100 percent correct, but that is not possible with this generation. Also I cringe at my friends into trying to gaslight me after I told them about my plan to mass buy freehold land in the countryside to add on to what my Granddad has given us.

My Dad has a shit ton of passive income from various properties and though I hate his guts I can't lie he has made the correct decision over investing it into something gay like stocks.

For example, bought some semi-detached lots in Johor, the city that borders Singapore. New development area is about 1 hour away from Singapore.

Bought for about 280k RM ( 55,991.32 EUR ) and then now they are worth about 650K RM in ~1 decade. ( 129,977.87 ).

From passive income alone from his assets he can easily earn close to 10k RM a month ( 2k euro ) a month witch might seem like a little to you guys but is actually a lot here. You can get by a very lavish life with just 2k a month here.

Of course my generation is utterly fucked. If I want to buy residential land in even a suburb, god will it be fucking expensive for a decent place. Agricultural land is easier ( i surveyed ) but it will not appreciate as much as residential + to grow anything you actually need to sink a decent amount of money into terraforming, plant saplings, fertilizer, defensive measures against boars and other animals etc. ( First hand knowledge from again my Dad acquiring some agricultural land )

Heh, the trend for zoomies like me is slave away and be happy with a shitty apartment ( that you still can't afford without a loan ) in the capital  Giggle

the reason why america was able to have maintain their never-before/after-seen levels of freedom was due to the seemingly unlimited land, which gave people the option to go out and make their own living, rather than having to submit to a one-sided contract with a landowner. early australia was similar, but the land quality was obviously worse, and the country wasnt founded with any concepts of freedom.

after the black death, there were fewer people to work the land, so peasants now had much greater bargaining power, and landowners were forced to raise wages. and because peasants now had more money, and landowners less, serfs increasingly had the option to buy their freedom.

modern landowners are understandably terrified of population decline, which is why we have mass immigration and insane overreactions to pandemics.

also, a number of techniques are used to herd people into cities. just this morning, i was thinking about how emasculating it would feel to live in a skyscraper and have a window-cleaner unexpectedly appear outside your apartment.
