For two reasons. Associations and worth.
When you use a gif, you are most likely associating that gif with a message or rewarding a poster.
If you constantly use the cage gif to make fun of a poster, your cage gif will now be associated as an ironic one instead of you laughing.
Now for worth. Let's say you want to reward a poster for his joke. Make sure you have a gif to use that does this well + you don't use often. This makes the rewarding factor of the gif higher.
One gif I reserve for excellent posts is banderas. I consider it a S tier gif. I hold out on using it on lower quality replies to maintain it's legendary status.
