This reads like a pederastic poem from Ancient Greece, not unlike Straton or Anacreon for example. They were obsessed of talking about the gaze of prettyboys which rendered them powerless and insecure. Plato even invested philosophical significance in their gaze since he argued the prettyboy's inert gaze created a kind of mirroring action between souls, seemingly passive in many ways but active and aggressive in others, that created the very sense of drive and longing that philosophy is meant to repurpose for intellectual life altogether. This mirroring action only occurred between an erastes and an eronemos. It could not happen between men of similar ages or between men and women. It is a large part of why he made eros the sine qua non of philosophy. As Andreas Fountoulakis puts it, "The man’s emotions are capable of directing his gaze towards the boy his soul desires as well as of summoning up the erômenos’ gratifying image as if it were the whole world. Vision is then governed by erôs, which has the power to turn a projection of the erastês’ soul into the unique object of vision."

For the same reason though they could never fuck, at least ideally (on vases the most you usually get is intracrural sex, i.e. fucking between the thighs). If they fucked the desire would be satiated and the mirroring action would be gone. In reality, a lot of them did probably fuck though.
