The airway hypothesis for sleep paralysis - dwohhgang - 25-04-2023

my theory of at least some of the reasons for sleep paralsyis

fat people and people with ressescion have more blocked/narrow airway

and this causes a stress response that is sleep paralsys

some proofs for my hypothesis:
my mom sister receeded but not my dad and me, my dad and me has not had it but mother and sister has

people report having it when sleeping on back, which makes sense since thats a position where airway is blocked the most

random qoute from google:
Research shows that sleeping on the back can be linked to an increased risk of sleep paralysis. Bulk up some pillow behind your back if you're prone to tipping over to your back while sleeping on your side. Keep bedtime consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night.

the cause is uncomfortable sleep since sleep paralysis is basically middle stage between asleep and awake, and brain dont fully function

it could be because of anxiety and depression also, like if you go to sleep and think "shit I have to go to work tomorrow at 6 am I'm gonna get yelled at, I have to wake up early or I'll be late and fired" you are probably gonna make poor short sleep and wake up in the middle of the night

sleeping on back is very possible if recessed you just have to learn it, use pillow for angle and muscle memory keeps your jaw closed and mewing the entire night. I had face surgery and had to sleep on my back for 2 weeks it became a habit and improved my sleep quality actually

I understand what you are trying to say in this thread and I know a lot of people who have this trouble.

But, Sleeping on back is the most comfortable way

Learning to nose breathe is what matters. Most of these people having such problem have ever so slightly open lips when they are sleeping and as a result, mouth breathe into recession.

learning to sleep on back in a good way is best but its problatmic if blocke airway most times

The fact this is even an issue is subhumanity, everyone needs to rope immediately

if you don't understand this phenomena yes, it's scary. your mind wakes up but your body is still on sleep mode, you can fix it by simply moving the tip of your fingers.

your theory is wrong OP, it's just because they ate too much fat or sth before going to bed. also sleep mechanism varies person to person. it's just not a big deal, teach them the finger trick and they will be fine.

there is an old saying in Iran about sleep paralysis that says there is a demon who will sit on your chest and make you unable to control your body, if your grab it's nose you will get rich. a tale to teach uneducated people just to move their fingers when this happens.
