the problem of induction breaks math - MysteriousWeeb420 - 11-02-2023

just because 1+1=2 the last time you thought about it, doesn't mean it will continue to do so in the future

but muh axioms say that 1+1 must equal 2 by definition!

that may be so, but you need to remember that these axioms have been shrewdly constructed in such a way that they reflect the physical world around us. this is important. think about it - if my math doesn't correspond to something tangible at it's very core then there is nothing differentiating it from a load of nonsense

hence, if the laws of nature are not invariant then everything begins to break down because the robustness of this ontological tether is not a given. math must adapt to the environment it is describing, the trajectory of which is impossible to predict

so when is 1+1 not 2

when I put two solid objects next to each other and a third one appears

the virtual isn't nonsense

legit

basically why i am skeptical of macroevolution, archeology, ect

Math and physics function completely differently throughout the universe

This realization broke my mind

You cant even define "1", it's a man-made concept

it's to be a representation, not defined

Semantics. Without assigning a fixed value to a term, it's next to useless

Also, orientative approximations need to have defining traits for both the object represented and the representant in order to be identifiable and discernible from other objects, events or phenomena generally.

literally this

math and physics function differently throughout the universe, which includes time

impossible to accurately extrapolate scientific principles that function today to 1+ billion years ago

if that was the predominant interaction in human experience then yeah
