other honorable mentions: a midsummer night's dream, hamlet, the canterbury tales, decameron, romeo and juliet (obviously), ivanhoe

Fair enough. Rocinante is the most famous character outside of don quixote/sancho and you've mentioned only pretending to have read the classics

tbf, i read it 15 years ago, so i only remember the impression/opinion i had about it after finishing it

and i did only read the classics (as my list suggests). you know my take about popular equaling high quality.
