from my experience the latter is far more common. parents are still giving my older brother shit to this day for it. "why didn't you finish your degree, why are you so lazy, why aren't you making 5k a week with the welding machine" meanwhile he literally wants to kill himself and i don't blame him

But it gets to a point where you are actively avoiding them, putting your phone on airplane mode and not checking your email, in case they try to contact you and spike your cortisol. Sorry about your brother. The lack of empathy and understanding some parents show is ridiculous. In my case I think they are just rly low IQ, and emotionally stunted. They cant change.
